Become a Hospice Volunteer

“I went into volunteering with Hospice wanting to make a difference for others in need. What I found was that this very rewarding work transforms more lives than the people we serve - I have ultimately received so much more than I could ever give as a Talbot Hospice volunteer.”

“While recently visiting a homebound patient and giving his caregiver a much needed break, I realized just how fortunate I am. To be able to help this family - knowing I made someone’s day a little brighter while lightening someone’s workload - is truly one of the most rewarding privileges of being aTalbot Hospice volunteer.”

Working with patients…
Unlike many other volunteer organizations, our volunteers are on the front line of Talbot Hospice’s mission to provide direct care to those patients and families facing life’s final journey. By participating in this most intimate and personal experience at this difficult time of life, the volunteer is often transformed.

The rewards…
The rewards for being a Hospice volunteer can be seen in the warm hugs, open hearts, and bright smiles of the patients when the volunteer visits. It is also noted in the body language of caregivers who appreciate having someone to help carry the burden of this process. At a time when the patient can no longer reach out to others and start new friendships, the volunteer arrives to make the patient’s journey better, even if just for a moment. The greatest reward of all is helping someone who can never repay you. That is a true act of selfless love.

Talbot Hospice Foundation offers a variety of appreciation events for volunteers to express their gratitude for the wonderful work they do, while creating a time for volunteers to socialize. These include a Spring Appreciation Luncheon, Fall Family Picnic and Crab Feast, Holiday Wassail Party, as well as field trips just for fun.

Behind the scenes…
Talbot Hospice staff are also supported by other volunteers, who provide much needed help with administrative work, cooking, gardening, running errands, data entry, scheduling…all the day-to-day activities that keep the organization and Hospice House running smoothly and efficiently. Professional services like lawn care, painting and general maintenance have also come from volunteers wishing to help. Check out our Job Descriptions or contact the Volunteer Coordinator for more information on current needs. The 13,000 hours that volunteers have donated each year to Talbot Hospice save the organization a significant amount of budget dollars, which enables the services to be provided to the community at no charge.

Which job is right for me?
Matching volunteer interests, talents and skills to appropriate job openings is important to ensure a rewarding volunteer experience. Click on the list of Volunteer Job Descriptions and contact the Volunteer Coordinator to discuss job availability, details, qualifications, and training that are required.

When can I start?
Some jobs can be started immediately while others may require training and orientation. Not all jobs are open at any given time. The Volunteer Training Class is offered when the need for more direct care volunteers exists, which might be once or several times a year. Once you have contacted the Volunteer Coordinator to express your interest in volunteering, you will automatically be notified of future training classes when they are scheduled, although there may be a gap of several months from the time you express your interest in volunteering and when the class is offered. A short term job assignment may be possible while you are waiting for this training opportunity. It is possible for an independent training program to be used in special circumstances to shorten the wait.

Volunteer Training
Talbot Hospice’s Volunteer Training Class is a comprehensive 12-hour program addressing a variety of end-of-life issues including: hospice philosophy and care, fears and attitudes about death, spirituality, grief, listening skills, setting boundaries, family dynamics, the funeral process and job specifics. An additional 6-hour class teaches personal care skills. The training program is designed to prepare volunteers to work directly with patients, especially as caregivers in the Guest Wing or companions at home.

Training and support is an ongoing process with in-services offered on a monthly basis. These educational events are open to all volunteers to provide additional end-of-life education. Direct care volunteers are required to complete at least one annual in-service. Topics are wide-ranging from Music Therapy, Nutrition at the end-of-life, Funeral Planning, Advance Directives, Meditation, and Massage to refresher classes for Guest Wing caregivers.

Browse our Volunteer Job Descriptions, check our Calendar for upcoming training sessions or appreciation events, or contact the Volunteer Coordinator at 410-822-6681 for more information on what volunteer opportunities are currently available.
